Francis M. Mead saved Carl B. Johnson from drowning, Belmont, Massachusetts, March 20, 1924. Carl, 6, broke through the ice close to a stone diving platform in a pool and disappeared in water 12 feet deep. Francis, 17, student, learned of the accident at his home. He went to the pool, ran out on the ice, and, fully clothed, jumped into the hole and swam to the bottom. He groped for Carl and upon rising for air came up under the firm ice. Opening his eyes, he was able with difficulty to see the hole in the ice and to reach it. He then swam down again and located Carl, who was on the bottom under the edge of the unbroken ice. Francis brought him to the surface and placed him on the platform. In response to a false report that another boy was in the hole, Francis swam to the bottom again but found no one. Carl was revived. 24141-2128
