Francis Macleod Willis, 21, student, died attempting to save Richard R. Macsherry, 10, from drowning, Rockport, Ontario, June 16, 1928. Richard fell from a barge into the St. Lawrence River at a point three eighths of a mile from the bank. The water was very cold, and there was a fast current. Willis, who was fully clothed, jumped from the barge, which was being towed by a launch, and swam 20 feet to Richard. Richard climbed upon Willis’s shoulders and head, causing Willis to be submerged. Both were submerged briefly once or twice more as they drifted in the current. Harry Packer Wilbur, Jr., swam to them from the launch. He grasped Richard and swam to the launch. Willis was drowned.
