Francis P. De Santis assisted in an attempt to rescue Michele Rubino, miner, from a mine cave-in, Brockwayville, Pennsylvania, December l2, 1908. Rubino, 28, was caught by a fall of rock. De Santis, 28, miner, and another man immediately made an effort to lift the rock but were unable to. Later De Santis and two other men were about to attempt to lift the rock when another fall occurred, catching De Santis’ trouser leg and pinning him to the floor and killing his companions. Francis P. De Santis died in Warren, Pa., on June 20, 1927, from head and brain injuries sustained in a dynamite blast during the construction of a highway in Tidioute, Pa., four days earlier.
He was rushed unconscious to the Warren Hospital where he underwent brain surgery to remove 14 pieces of bone from his fractured skull. He never regained consciousness.
