Francis Theodore Waldo died attempting to save Robert E. Mittelstadt and Penny L. Waldo from drowning, Jamestown, Pennsylvania, June 19, 1988. Robert, 16, and Penny, 15, neither of whom could swim, were wading in Pymatuning Reservoir when they stepped into deep water and began to flounder. From a nearby point on the bank, Penny’s father, Waldo, 45, who also was unable to swim, ran into the water for them. Near them, Waldo floundered in the deep water, then submerged and did not re-appear. Penny was saved by others. Waldo and Robert, who had also submerged, were recovered from the reservoir by divers, but they could not be revived.
