Frank A. Brandofino saved Luigi Di Meglio from drowning, Brooklyn, New York, September 21, 1957. While helping to load a ship in New York Harbor, Di Meglio, 49, who could not swim, fell from the dock into cold water 35 feet deep. He was submerged briefly and began flailing his arms wildly. As Di Meglio began to sink, Brandofino, 26, longshoreman, dived fully clothed from the dock into the water, which contained some debris. He swam underwater five feet and located Di Meglio three feet beneath the surface within seven feet of one of the propellers of the ship, which momentarily was expected to start its engines prior to departure. Brandofino took hold of the hair of Di Meglio, who seized him around the neck with both hands. Brandofino made his way to the surface with Di Meglio, who continued to struggle, causing both to be submerged briefly. After freeing himself, Brandofino moved behind Di Meglio and took hold of his collar. Di Meglio then ceased struggling. Pushing Di Meglio ahead of him, Brandofino swam two feet toward the dock and grasped a cargo net which had been lowered by other workmen. He maintained his hold on Di Meglio as the others drew them to the dock and aided them from the water. Di Meglio and Brandofino contracted colds but recovered. 44245-4150
