Frank Allen Tefft died attempting to save Margaret M. McNamara and Elsie V. Anderson from drowning, Providence, Rhode Island, February 10, 1924. When Margaret, 12, and Elsie, 8, were sliding on the ice on South Lake, the ice broke under them, and they fell into water about seven feet deep. Frank, 14, schoolboy, who was skating 450 feet distant, immediately skated toward the girls. He broke through 300 feet from them and struggled to keep at the surface. Two men then skated near to the hole and lay on the ice. Just as one of them was about to grasp Frank’s hand, the ice broke under them, and they too fell into the water. Frank and one of the men sank and were drowned. Elsie also was drowned, but Margaret grasped the edge of the ice and was saved by two other men. 24143-1983
