Frank B. Fay III, 22, commercial artist, saved Joseph M. Kelly, 45, merchant, and helped to save James H. Dunham, Jr., 24, printer’s apprentice, from drowning, Seaside Park, New Jersey, July 5, 1926. While Kelly was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, he was carried by a current 800 feet from shore into water 20 feet deep. Fay, almost fully clothed, swam from shore to him and supported him while Kelly renewed his strength. He then towed Kelly 150 feet toward shore, Kelly aiding somewhat by swimming a part of the distance. Calls were then heard from Dunham, who, though doubtful of his ability to render effective aid, had entered the water to rescue Kelly. He had swum back and forth trying to locate Kelly, become tired, and then tried to swim back to shore, but he was unable to make progress and became dazed. Kelly felt able to swim, so Fay left him and swam 200 feet toward Dunham. Then seeing a man approaching with a life preserver, he swam 100 feet to him and helped take the life preserver 125 feet to Dunham and a lifeguard who was supporting him. Fay and the two other men then towed Dunham on the life preserver 875 feet to shore. When Dunham was brought to shore, he was unconscious but was revived. Fay was fatigued. Kelly swam back to shore on a board.
