Frank E. Quirk, Jr., died after attempting to rescue the crewman of a disabled tanker during a severe storm, Gloucester, Massachusetts, February 6, 1978. When a foreign oil tanker got into trouble off the Massachusetts coast during a blinding snowstorm and called for assistance, Quirk, 49, pilot boat operator, set out-in his 45-foot craft, the CAN DO, accompanied by four other men, to give aid. Winds up to 80 m.p.h. and swells surpassing 30 feet in height caused the CAN DO to sink. Quirk and the other four men drowned. 56157-6338
