Frank Herbert Olmsted died attempting to save Mary H. Ensign from drowning, Midland, Michigan, July 26, 1935. While trying to swim in the Chippewa River, Mary, 12, got into deep water 75 feet from the bank near the junction of the Chippewa and Tittabawissa rivers and drifted in a current of 3 m.p.h. into the Tittabawissa River. Without removing any of his clothing, Olmsted, 20, painter, who was weary from lack of sleep, ran to the bank, swam 100 feet to Mary, and put his arm around her. He then called for help once or twice and sank slowly with one arm raised. Mary also sank. Both were drowned.
