Frank Hillman Speed saved Joseph V. Caron from drowning, Millinocket, Maine, December 4, 1931. While playing near the bank of Millinocket Stream, Joseph, 4, with his sled slid off the bank and broke through thin ice 15 feet from the bank into water eight feet deep. There was a current of 1 to 2 m.p.h. Speed, 44, real estate dealer, who was a poor swimmer and was fully clothed, saw Joseph drifting under the ice. He ran onto the ice, broke through 12 feet from the bank, and was submerged. As he was rising, he saw Joseph and grabbed him. He was momentarily submerged again and then supported Joseph and got one arm on the ice. After considerable delay men arrived and threw a rope to him from the bank, and he and Joseph were pulled upon the ice. Joseph was unconscious but was revived. 31778-2646
