Frank J. Nagel, 27, butter maker, died attempting to save H. Katherine Murphy, 8, from drowning, Kingston, Minnesota, July 23, 1916. Katherine fell into water over her depth in the North Branch of the Crow River from a footbridge that gave way. Nagel jumped into the river from the bridge and reached Katherine five feet from the bridge. Katherine grabbed him around the neck with both arms, and they drifted downstream. When they were 95 feet from the bridge, a man swam to them. Nagel grasped the man’s arm, and all three began sinking. The man broke Nagel’s hold and swam to the bank. Katherine and Nagel were drowned. 19015-1571
