Frank J. Wilhelm, 13, schoolboy, saved William Moreman, 11, schoolboy, from drowning, Akron, Ohio, January 16, 1933. William broke through ice an inch thick and was momentarily submerged in water seven feet deep in the Ohio Canal at a point 60 feet from the bank. The hole in the ice was four feet in diameter. William tried to climb out, but ice broke off as he grasped the edge. Frank, who was heavily clothed and was not in good physical condition, walked cautiously toward William and broke through at a point 40 feet from the bank. He swam to the edge of the ice and then with his arms broke ice as he swam to William. Supporting William with one arm, he turned and swam 12 feet to the edge of the ice and then helped William to get hold of the end of a rope that was thrown into the hole by Frank’s father, who, a nonswimmer, remained close to the bank. Frank boosted William as William was pulled out of the water. After William was drawn to safe ice, the rope was thrown to Frank, and he was pulled out of the water and to safe ice. William was semiconscious, but he revived. 32794-2747
