Frank M. Johnson saved L. Vernon Shepherd from suffocation, Terre Haute, Indiana, January 23, 1920. Shepherd, 30, water meter reader, through a 20-inch manhole entered a water meter vault, the bottom of which was 6.5 feet below the surface of the ground, but in about two iminutes he was overcome by gas in the vault. Johnson, 40, water works company general foreman, let himself down into the vault through the manhole, raised Shepherd, and supported him at the base of the manhole, expecting a man who was approaching to draw him out. The man had meanwhile turned aside to get help, and Johnson, after supporting Shepherd for a minute, was overcome. Just before Johnson fell unconscious, men who arrived drew Shepherd out by leaning into the manhole, and a man then entered and put a chain on Johnson without difficulty, and Johnson was drawn out. Shepherd regained consciousness an hour after he was removed, and Johnson was revived three hours later. 20250-1766
