Frank M. Nielsen rescued Priscilla R. Whitaker from attacking dogs, Corona, California, November 14, 1996. Ms. Whitaker, 39, and a friend were walking through a residential area when three rottweilers approached. Two of the dogs took Ms. Whitaker to the ground, then all three began to maul her. Riding his bicycle nearby, Nielsen, 43, engineer, saw the attack. He rode to the scene, taking his bicycle up against one of the larger dogs, which weighed about 100 pounds. He then got off the bicycle, lifted it, and slammed it down against the dogs, causing them to release Ms. Whitaker. As the dogs continued to menace, Nielsen stood between them and Ms. Whitaker and, screaming, used his bicycle to fight them off for about three minutes. The dogs left the area but were captured. Ms. Whitaker required hospital treatment, including surgery, for several bite wounds. Nielsen was treated at the hospital for back pain, from which he recovered.
