Frank M. Speaker, 26, hospital orderly, rescued Smith W. Whedon, 21, lawyer, from a fatal fall, Los Angeles, California, April 30, 1928. Whedon, who was suffering from diphtheria and was delirious, climbed out of a window of the third floor of a hospital and clung to the window sill 30 feet above a paved courtyard. Speaker and other men ran to the courtyard below the window. Whedon, who weighed 170 pounds, was held briefly by nurses and then began to fall. Speaker stood about four feet from the wall, braced himself, and extended his arms. Whedon’s head struck Speaker on the neck, and Speaker was knocked down backward. He sustained bruises but was not disabled. Whedon was not injured, but he died three days later from the disease. 28347-2341
