Frank O. Brake, 36, brakeman, saved Alta M. Vaught, 13, from being run over by a train, Paris, Illinois, July 22, 1911. Alta was crossing a railroad track apparently without noticing a train that was approaching at a speed of 10 or 12 m.p.h. less than 100 feet from her. The engineer reversed the engine and applied the air. Brake was sitting on the pilot of the locomotive, and when the locomotive was 50 feet from Alta, he slid down and stood with one foot on a narrow step at the bottom of the pilot, holding to a rod with one hand. With his free arm he grabbed Alta and lifted her from the track. As he did so, her body struck his hip and her head struck his jaw, but he retained his hold. He drew himself up on the rod with Alta, and, although she struggled and caused him to slide along the rod, he held her until the train stopped 75 feet beyond the point of rescue. Alta was not injured. 6974-843
