Frank O. James rescued Marcella L. Crawford from burning, Orrick, Missouri, April 24, 1971. When the pickup truck she was driving collided head-on with the end of a bridge railing, Mrs. Crawford, 38, suffered extensive injuries and lost consciousness. James, 53, truckdriver, ran to the pickup, where flames had appeared on the engine, the door, and around the cap of the fuel tank and were increasing. Breaking a window, James opened the locked door. Mrs. Crawford, with flames alongside her was pinned against the seat by the steering wheel. Placing one foot against the seat’s backrest and depressing the springs, James was able to free Mrs. Crawford. He drew her out of the truck; and, as he dragged her away from it, there was a minor explosion that scattered burning oil over the roadway. Mrs. Crawford was hospitalized for burns and injuries. 52759-6017
