Frank Rance, 39, chauffeur, sustained fatal injuries attempting to save Mary C., 37, and Regina G. Cryan, 3, from burning, New York, New York, December 10, 1912. Mrs. Cryan and Regina were in apartments on the third floor over a stable when fire broke out in the hayloft and dense smoke poured up the stairway. Mrs. Cryan took Regina to a window at the front of the building and cried for help. Rance was on the opposite side of the street. He entered the building and, after the fire was under control, was found in a room on the third floor, unconscious. He regained consciousness but died the third day following of pneumonia brought on by inhaling smoke. Mrs. Cryan dropped Regina into a blanket and remained at the window herself until firemen reached her with ladders. 10668-868
