Frank Spirk, 30, pipefitter, saved John Kravitz, 20, pipefitter, from suffocation, Hellertown, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1916. Kravitz was overcome by gas while working in a tank used for cooling coke gas. Spirk entered the tank through a manhole at the top, descended a rope nine feet to Kravitz, and tied the rope to him. Men at the top raised Kravitz through the manhole, and Spirk was then overcome by the gas. Spirk was later removed from the tank unconscious but was revived. Kravitz also was revived. 18641-1500
