Frank Vernon Rowland rescued Edith G. Hernandez from burning, Van Nuys, California, January 10, 1973. Mrs. Hernandez, 45, was trapped in her one-story dwelling when a cupboard fell on her following an explosion that resulted in extensive damage to the house and in the outbreak of fire. Hearing Mrs. Hernandez call for help, Rowland, 29, machinist, ran to the rear entrance, entered, and made his way to her at the kitchen doorway. After removing the cupboard from Mrs. Hernandez, Rowland with some difficulty took her to the back porch. Fireman aided him in carrying her away from the dwelling before an explosive spread of flames filled the house, which then began collapsing. Mrs. Hernandez recovered from burns she had sustained.
