Frank W. Roberts, 47, chief engineer, saved Ruth L. Buttermore, 15; Eleanor L. Koser, 11; Pauline L. Tourjee, 14, and two others from drowning, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, July 29, 1918. Ruth, Eleanor, and Pauline fell from a rowboat in a reservoir 75 feet from the bank, where the water was 12 feet deep. They could not swim. Two girls who held to the boat lost their holds and got into difficulty at the same time. Roberts was swimming 15 feet from the girls, and he swam to Ruth and Eleanor, caught hold of them by the hair with one hand, and swam 50 feet with them to wadable water. He then swam to a point where Pauline had gone under the surface, dived, reached her on the bottom, and sprang upward with her. He came in contact with one of the other girls, who was sinking, and pushed her upward. He held Pauline to his side with his left arm, and with his left hand he caught hold of the other girl, to whom another girl clung, and he swam 50 feet with them to wadable water. He swam back 50 feet to a cap, where he thought there was another girl, and then returned to wadable water, where he collapsed. He was given assistance and suffered no ill effects except extreme nervousness. Pauline was semiconscious but revived. None of the others was seriously affected. 19067-1574
