Frank Williamson rescued Loraine Hyde from burning, Houston, Texas, May 19, 1972. Miss Hyde, 18, was alone in her apartment on the second floor of a two-story frame building when an explosion occurred in the kitchen. Williamson, 45, roofer, was attracted and ran to the apartment’s outside stairway, ascended to the door, and forced it open. Flames were issuing from the broken windows and had burned through the roof as Williamson entered the smoke-filled living room, to which the fire had spread and where heat was blistering. He located Miss Hyde, who had been burned severely, and led her to the open door, where she collapsed. Williamson, who had sustained minor burns, took Miss Hyde outside and beat out the flames on her body. She was removed to a hospital but succumbed to her burns.
