Franklin D. White, 39, railway mail clerk, died attempting to save Clara M. Holland, 16, from drowning, Springdale, Arkansas, July 2, 1916. After having been warned by White against wading far from the bank, Clara and White’s daughter, neither of whom could swim, waded into deep water in the White River. White heard screams and ran to the scene, but his daughter had already drowned. Although he could not swim more than a few strokes, White entered the deep water and swam toward Clara, but both sank and were drowned before he had got within six feet of her. 16670-1259
