Franklin T Briggs saved Ola L. Bechan and Laura E. Senay from drowning, Oakham, Massachusetts, July 20, 1917. The girls became distressed in Deans Pond 20 feet from the bank, where the water was about eight feet deep. Franklin, 9, schoolboy, waded one or two steps from the bank and then swam to Ola, 13, who grasped his foot. He swam five feet with her to a submerged pier, and she waded to the bank. Franklin swam five feet to Laura, 12, who grasped his bathing suit, and they sank but came up again. While Laura held him, Franklin swam toward the bank. They sank again but came to the surface, and he continued swimming with her but made very little progress. When they were 10 feet from the bank and Franklin was about exhausted, a girl and a woman went to them and helped them to the bank. 18285-1379
