Fraser Maxwell Dean died after helping to save Kimberley A. Dean from drowning, Orange Beach, Alabama, March 30, 1989. Kimberley, 15, was wading in the Gulf of Mexico when she was carried into water over her head by a strong current. She called for help. Her father’s cousin, Dean, 51, superintendent of education, was on shore; he waded and swam to her. Dean pushed Kimberley repeatedly against the current toward shore, until she was able to cover the remaining distance on her own. Dean collapsed in the water. Unconscious, he was taken to shore by others, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
