Fred E. Murphy died attempting to help save Alexander Knaggs from suffocation, Toledo, Ohio, January 29, 1918. Knaggs, 57, laborer, became dazed from benzol fumes while painting the inside of an open tank nine feet high. Another laborer entered the tank and tried to push him up a ladder, and a second rescuer went to the top of the tank, reached down, and took hold of him. The second rescuer tried to pull Knaggs up the ladder while the first rescuer pushed him, but they failed to move him. Murphy, 55, foreman, was called. Without taking precaution, he jumped into the tank and tried to aid in getting Knaggs up the ladder, but the combined efforts of all three rescuers failed. Murphy and the other rescuer who had entered the tank were then overcome by the fumes, and they lay there for a few minutes, or until they were removed. Efforts were made to revive them with a pulmotor, but they died. Knaggs revived and climbed from the tank after air had been forced into it. 18726-1430
