Fred M. Clay, 51, clergyman, rescued Florence M., 24; Robert B., 4, and Marjorie E. Morrison, 2, from a runaway, Cassadaga, New York, December 1, 1916. A spirited horse, hitched to a buggy, which Mrs. Morrison was driving, ran away when a thill broke and struck it. The children were in the buggy with Mrs. Morrison. The buggy swayed from side to side, and the broken thill struck the horse at times and caused it to rear and plunge. It ran at a speed of 20 m.p.h. Clay ran from a house to the center of the street, and when the horse came within his reach, he grasped the bridle with both hands. He was jerked off his feet once or twice, but he remained on his feet most of the time and ran with the horse. After proceeding 35 feet, Clay wrenched the bridle with all his strength and threw the horse to the street. Clay also fell and lay under the horse. Men grasped the horse and assisted Clay to his feet. His body was bruised considerably, and his scalp and lips were injured, but he was not permanently affected. Mrs. Morrison and the children were not injured. 17420-1537
