Fredderick S. Bettis died attempting to help save Brozana S. Goodwin from drowning, Dauphin Island, Alabama, July 13, 1991. Miss Goodwin, 19, was wading in waist-deep water of the Gulf of Mexico just off the eastern tip of Dauphin Island when water currents pulled her farther out, into deeper water. Struggling and calling for help, she was observed by family members, including her cousin, Fredderick, 13, student, and her stepfather. Fredderick immediately swam to Miss Goodwin, he too struggling to stay afloat, and Miss Goodwin’s stepfather swam toward her. Both Fredderick and the stepfather submerged and drowned. A passing boater towed Miss Goodwin to wadable water, from which she walked to shore.
