Frederic A. Coons, 38, construction superintendent, died attempting to save Joseph Young, 56, stationary engineer’s helper, from drowning, Wildwood, New Jersey, June 17, 1929. While Young was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, he became distressed and was carried by an off-shore current to a point 300 feet from shore. Coons, who weighed much less than Young and was not in good physical condition, swam 70 feet to Young, who had collapsed. Coons supported him for five or six minutes until a lifeguard reached him and relieved him of Young. Coons then collapsed. Men arrived with a boat, and Young and Coons were taken to shore. They could not be revived. 29352-2395
