Frederick C. Brown, 22, marine fireman, saved Olivia N. De W. Heal, 18, from drowning, Guysborough, Nova Scotia, December 31, 1914. While skating together on Harts Cove, Miss Heal and another girl skated into open water and became separated. They were 250 feet from shore, where the water was 15 feet deep. Miss Heal went under the surface twice, came up, and called for help. Brown skated 650 feet to the edge of the ice, and although heavily dressed, he jumped into the water without removing his skates, swam 15 feet to Miss Heal, took hold of the sleeve of her coat with one hand, and swam and towed her to the ice. Others helped them on the ice. Miss Heal was numb, and Brown was nearly exhausted. Miss Heal’s companion was rescued by another man.
