Frederick G. Dunkel, 15, schoolboy, saved Zita F. Crawford, 13, from drowning, Mount Carmel, Illinois, July 8, 1928. Zita stepped into deep water from a submerged log that extended from the bank of the Wabash River. She was submerged briefly once or twice and drifted to a point 12 feet from the bank. Frederick, who was fully clothed, took a step or two from the bank and plunged into the water to Zita. A struggle followed, and Zita climbed upon Frederick, forcing him under the surface. He rose, and while Zita retained her hold, Frederick swam with difficulty 10 feet to wadable water.
