Frederick G. Preston saved Peter W. Langgaard from drowning, Niagara Falls, Ontario, October 23, 1913. Langgaard, 24, sailor, attempted to shoot the rapids of the Niagara River in a motorboat, but a piece of driftwood stopped his propellor, and his boat was carried around and around in a whirlpool. Three times his boat was drawn close to the axis of the pool, where there was a tremendous suction, but each time it was diverted toward the outer edge of the whirlpool. Darkness fell, and the boat began to fill with water. A search light was brought to the scene and the light was directed on the boat as it swung around in the whirlpool. Four hours after the boat entered the whirlpool, Preston, 41, painter, left the bank with a rope fastened to his arm, swam about 125 feet, and grasped the boat as it swung around in a current of 8 m.p.h. Men on the bank then pulled Preston and the boat to the bank. Langgaard was uninjured. 12053-1036
