Frederick Henry Gilman saved Thayer N. Chase and attempted to save Louis W. Royea from drowning, Richford, Vermont, January 14, 1932. Gilman, 24, salesman, got on the ice in wadable water five feet from the bank, ran 85 feet, and then crawled flat on the ice and pushed the board lengthwise in front of himself to the hole. Thayer, 14, grasped the board, pulling it with Gilman on the end of it two feet closer to the hole as he climbed part way out of the hole. Gilman edged back about a foot, and then after Louis, 13, had sunk, he crawled on the board within reach of Thayer, grabbed his clothing, and pulled him out of the hole. Thayer then held to the board and to Gilman, and Gilman crawled 12 feet from the hole, drawing the board with him to firmer ice. Gilman then ran on thinner ice to a point five or six feet downstream from the hole and saw Louis being carried along under the ice by the current. He tried several times to break the ice with the board but was unsuccessful, and he then returned to the bank. (See case of LOUIS WILLIAM ROYEA.) 32523-2660
