Frederick J. Callahan, 27, postal clerk, saved J. Joy Moffatt, 21, from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, April 30, 1947. An automobile in which Miss Moffatt and three other persons were riding plunged off a wall into Fort Point Channel. Miss Moffatt and two of the other occupants escaped from the automobile. The latter two swam to safety, but Miss Moffatt was unconscious on rising to the surface. Callahan, who suffered from a heart disorder and had been advised by his physician against over-exertion, jumped from the wall, which was 15 feet above water, and swam to Miss Moffatt, who was 40 feet out in cold water 30 feet deep. After towing her 15 feet, he was assisted in taking her the remaining distance to the wall by a young man who had swum out with a line of fire hose held by men on the wall. Miss Moffatt and Callahan suffered from shock but recovered. The fourth occupant of the automobile lost his life. 41038-3524
