Frederick J. Folsom, 23, civil engineer, attempted to save Fred R. Crome, 35, theater manager, from drowning, Long Beach, California, June 23, 1912. Crome became distressed while bathing in the Pacific Ocean and was carried out by a current. Men tried to throw a rope to him but failed. Folsom, who was fully dressed, removed his coat and swam out to Crome, but Crome seized him around the neck and they sank together. Folsom freed himself under water, rose, and supported Crome at the surface. Waves separated them twice, but Folsom regained a hold on Crome both times. The breakers were eight feet high, and attempts of lifeguards to launch their boat were futile. A powerboat came toward Folsom from a point farther out, and a life ring was thrown to a point near Folsom, who had then lost Crome. Folsom reached the life ring nearly exhausted and got to a wadable point with its help. He was too weak to stand and was given a stimulant and put to bed, but he recovered. Crome was drowned. 9325-1341
