Frederick J. Knob, 22, private secretary, saved James F. Vallely, 51, building engineer, from drowning, Long Beach, New York, August 9, 1916. Vallely became distressed in the Atlantic Ocean, 250 feet from shore, where the water was about 10 feet deep. Knob swam to him and started shoreward with him but made very slow progress because of a strong current that swept parallel with the beach. Two other bathers came to his aid but left almost immediately. Knob kept swimming shoreward but was becoming exhausted. When he had proceeded 150 feet shoreward and had drifted 200 feet with Vallely, a bather brought him a life preserver to which a rope was attached, and Knob and Vallely were drawn ashore. Knob was exhausted but recovered. Vallely died of apoplexy a short time after being landed. 16904-1283
