Frederick M. DeRick, 54, factory department foreman, saved George J. Deyo, 13, from drowning, Bridgeport, Connecticut, June 9, 1923. George fell into the Poquonock River and was carried by the current to midstream. DeRick ran 200 feet to the bank and, almost fully clothed, swam 65 feet through deep water to George. He towed George at his back about 10 feet, and then George grasped him around the neck, choking him and causing both to go under the surface. A struggle followed, and DeRick became helpless. A strong swimmer then swam to them from the bank and towed them to wadable water. 23355-2062
