Frederick T. Haywood saved Wilhelmina P. Martin and three others from burning, Fernandina Beach, Florida, November 24, 1970. At night fire broke out in a one-story frame dwelling where Wilhelmina, 3, her eight-year-old sister, and her three-year-old brother were asleep in bed with their 63-year-old grandmother, who was blind. Haywood, 32, schoolteacher, ran to the door of the house and kicked it open. Flames covered one wall and were spreading on two others as Haywood ran to the bed. He took Wilhelmina and her sister outside and then ran back to the bed. Heat was intense and flames were within three feet of Haywood as he picked up the grandmother and told the boy to follow him outside. He found the door shut and opened it with some difficulty. The boy ran from the dwelling. Haywood followed, carrying the grandmother. Soon afterward the house was totally afire.
