Frederick W. Zengen saved Ferdinand G. Ludeke from drowning, New York, New York, March 19, 1908. Frederick, 13, schoolboy, fully dressed, dived into the East River and swam 65 feet to Ferdinand, 10, who had fallen into the river and, unable to swim, was being carried rapidly downstream by the strong tide. Frederick grabbed him by the hair, raised his head out of the water, and tried to swim toward shore with him but could make no headway against the tide. After discovering he could not reach the bank, he trod water and supported Ferdinand. Later, men in a rowboat went to their aid and took both boys aboard. Ferdinand was unconscious but was revived on the bank. 3307-454
