G. Clifford Cress, 42, clergyman, saved Mildred K. Spicer, 9, from drowning, Lewistown, Montana, August 20, 1915. Mildred was swept from a bar into a deep pool in Spring Creek and was carried toward a whirlpool at the middle of the pool. Cress, a poor swimmer, waded, fully dressed, into deep water and swam 40 feet to Mildred, who was then under the surface.
