Gardner B. Aubrey died attempting to save Francis X. Gradie from drowning, Cambridge, Massachusetts, May 30, 1921. Francis, 16, student, dived from a raft into deep water in the Charles River 80 feet from the bank. He came to the surface, floundered helplessly, and sank again. Gardner, 17, delivery boy, dived from the raft toward him just after Francis sank the second time, and the two boys rose, facing each other. Before Gardner could take hold of Francis, the latter grasped Gardner around the neck, and both boys rose separately. A youth reached Gardner, who was swimming blindly, and attempted to grasp him, but Gardner slipped through his grasp, sank, and was drowned. Francis also sank and was drowned. 21560-1725
