Garfield E. Smith, 13, schoolboy, died attempting to save D. DuWaine Engstrom, 10, from drowning, Stoneboro, Pennsylvania, April 16, 1940. DuWaine fell from a pier in Sandy Lake into water nine feet deep. Garfield removed only his boots, ran on the pier to a point opposite DuWaine, and entered the water. The boys next were observed five feet from the pier, and DuWaine was behind Garfield with his arms around Garfield’s neck. Garfield stroked for two minutes, when they were submerged and rose five feet farther from the pier. A minute later, Garfield still stroking, they sank and were drowned. 39833-3326
