Gary C. Broste saved Eugene A. Baker and a woman from drowning, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, October 28, 1981. After attempting to save a 35-year-old woman from being carried away by the current of the South Saskatchewan River, Baker, 47, foundered in the cold water about 30 feet from the bank. Having run along the bank to keep up with Baker’s efforts, Broste, 31, police officer, entered the river, waded and swam to Baker, and brought him to wadable water near the bank. Retracing his route, Broste swam to the woman and brought her in. All three recovered from ill effects of the cold water.
