Gary L. Wells helped to rescue Valerie M. Allen from assault, Tacoma, Washington, March 21, 1987. At night, Miss Allen, 23, was being attacked in a parking lot by a man armed with a knife. Wells, 36, stockbroker, heard her scream and, accompanied by another man, ran to where the assailant had pinned Miss Allen to the ground and was attempting to stab her. While the other man confronted the assailant, Wells moved in, pulled Miss Allen out of the assailant’s reach, and led her away. The assailant fled in his pickup truck after attempting to run down Miss Allen and her rescuers. Miss Allen required hospital treatment for a stab wound, and she recovered.
