Gary Lee Dutcher saved Tracy Chrysinger from being struck by a locomotive, Columbus, Ohio, August 25, 1973. Tracy, 3, was sitting on a railroad track on which locomotives were being shifted. Dutcher, 22, railroad brakeman, was on the front platform of the lead engine and, seeing Tracy, signaled for an emergency stop. Fearing that the locomotives could not be stopped in time, Dutcher jumped from the lead engine when it was within 30 feet of Tracy. He ran ahead of the slowing locomotives, moved onto the track, and reached Tracy. Without breaking stride, Dutcher picked up Tracy and ran from the path of the lead engine, which narrowly missed him as it passed.
