Gary Owen Wiseman saved Bruce E. Wier from drowning, Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia, November 29, 1969. Bruce, 9, a non-swimmer, broke through ice about six feet from the bank of the Sackville River. He was submerged briefly and then began flailing. Gary, 14, schoolboy, was attracted to the opposite bank about 40 feet from Bruce and started across tube ice to give aid; but near midstream the ice broke and he was submerged. He rose under the ice but broke through it. Gary then swam, breaking the ice ahead of him, to where Bruce had gone under and was just beneath the surface. Lifting Bruce’s head above water, Gary continued to the bank, breaking the ice as before. Gary again was submerged briefly; and a boy on the bank then aided him in removing Bruce from the water.
