Gene Kight rescued Stephen J. Jankowiak from electric shock, Miami, Florida, May 7, 1974. When overhead high-power lines caused a truck-crane to become electrically charged, Jankowiak, 21, the truck operator, was rendered unconscious. Kight, 32, firefighter was attracted and noted the situation. Wearing aluminized firefighting gloves with asbestos palms, Kight approached Jankowiak, who was lying about 15 inches from the truck, and took hold of him. As he started to pull Jankowiak farther from the vehicle, Kight received a jolt of electricity that threw him backward and caused him to lose consciousness for a time.
