George A. Branard, Sr., 47, plumber, died attempting to save Henry W. Depenbrock, 18, plumber’s apprentice, from suffocation, Houston, Texas, June 13, 1923. Depenbrock was overcome by sewer gas in a manhole 16 feet deep. Branard went to a neighboring building and, having called for a rope, hurried to the manhole without one. Unprotected, he descended a ladder in the manhole, and when he was several feet from the bottom, he fell on Depenbrock. Five minutes later Branard and Depenbrock were drawn out of the hole, but neither could be revived. 26262-2098
