George A. Rausch died saving Charles E. and William C. Frank from drowning, Columbus, Ohio, July 22, 1919. While swimming in the Olentangy River, Charles, 11, was carried by the current into a whirlpool, where the water was 22 feet deep. William, 12, swam to him and made an unsuccessful attempt to swim out of the whirlpool with him to the bank. Rausch, 43, superintendent, removed his overalls and shoes, plunged into the river from the bank, and swam 25 feet to the boys. They were holding to each other. He took hold of one of them and attempted to swim to the bank but was carried farther from the bank by the whirlpool. He finally succeeded in pushing them out of the whirlpool, and they drifted downstream and were rescued by men who waded from the bank. Rausch tried to swim out of the whirlpool but suddenly went under the surface and was drowned. 19747-1522
