George C. Dewey, 15, schoolboy, died attempting to save W. Clark Morgan, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Olivet, Michigan, January 2, 1913. George, Clark, and five other boys started to leave the ice on Pine Lake because of its unsafe condition. Two of the boys removed their skates, but the others skated toward shore. Clark skated out of the course of the others, and the ice broke beneath him, and he fell into deep water several hundred feet from the bank. George skated about 75 feet toward Clark, lay on the ice with his shoulders five feet from the hole, and extended a hockey stick to Clark. Clark grasped the stick and with its aid got the upper part of his body up on the ice, then the ice broke, and both boys fell into the water. Efforts were made to save them, but both were drowned. 9758-952
